An atmospheric river has settled in over California. We often call this the “pineapple express.” The winds are warm as the jet stream brings multiple water-laden storms one after another in from the south.
Three power poles snapped yesterday afternoon along the southwest side of our property. PG&E crews were on scene within a few hours and worked through the night. As of this post, still no power. We are using our mobile hotspot to check in with emails, posts and weather updates. Used a generator from the RV for our coffee.
Funny thing, people will tout this as climate change. Let me be clear, historically, this is not unusual for our area.
I like the moon peeking thru the clouds…lovely picture

Dear Mary (Backdoor Artist). Thank you for subscribing to my blog. You were number 100 to subscribe. You won a DVD that tells how I got my picture book, Flip Flap Floodle published and has me reading the story during a presentation at Idlewild Elementary School in 2008. Please send me your snail mail address to joanyedwards @ earthlink.net. Or if you prefer, you can swap it for a pitch and 1000 word manuscript critique. Perhaps with all your power outages, you didn’t get to see it on my blog.

We lost about 10′ off the top of our 60’+ Redwood tree. It was an Arbor Day tree seedling the kids brought home about 20 years ago. 😦

Common expression in our neck of the woods when the jet stream dips into the tropics and we get warm, windy, and very wet storms in rapid succession.

I had the same experience and it’s poured all day…nothing new. we’ve been thinking of a trailer and you’ve given me added reason! tho we do have gas, a generator would be nice! stay dry!

sooooo, looking for justification? We have a generator for the well, but it is big. We grab the RV generators because they are small. Generators are less expensive than RVs.
I think RVs are valuable in their own right.
Mostly, we travel with a trailer because I have food allergies. It is not safe for me to dine out. So I always have my own food. Healthier food as well.
The RV gives us opportunity for rural trips. We often go places with no amenities, The generators make it possible to dry camp in wonderful vast open spaces. We also travel with our dogs. I know, we could rough it in a tent, but we aren’t 20 anymore! lol

This is not an uncommon event. Well, perhaps three poles going down at once is. Hopefully this will bring much needed drought relief. About 17 years ago we had a similar storm system. We were without power for over 2 weeks.

Amazing how there’s beauty even in a disaster. Thanks for the details about the pineapple express experience. Your blog is educating readers all over. Sorry the experience is so difficult though.

The crews got the downed lines up quickly. We kept the dogs in until the live wires were removed.

An RV generator for coffee, and I don’t have to buy the whole RV, I can buy the RV generator separately– I’m gonna remember both those tips– thanks!! : P
Hope you’re back up and running. : )

Propane stove and french press works, too. For that matter, we can heat water on the wood stove. Gotta have coffee backups! lol
Electricity out for only a day. It really is not as bad as the news lets on. These storms are nothing like Sandy. Some folks out here have flooded, but our place is not built in a flood plain. Building along creeks and rivers is all nice until the water rises. At some point, it always does.
Thanks for checking in.
