I’ve found that when I paint a piece with strong shadows, it helps to do a rough shadow map. I usually rough them out in pencil. Then in the spirit of competing with Tim, The Forester Artist, I thought a shadow map using his pens would be a good bet.

Here are the finished pieces that Tim and I donated to Sierra Cascade Logging Conference Lumberjack Dinner and Education Auction supporting forestry education. We hope this head to head, friendly “Hers vs. His” competition raises the stakes and funds brought in. There’s a lot of talking smack taking place in our house! We’ll keep you posted.

As I started to wrangle my week under control, I slipped out on a break to snap some shots of the pipevine swallowtails. I had company. Neither of us got what we were after. Here’s a start to Kinta stalking butterflies on newly blossomed Blue dicks.

A childhood friend has a birthday this week. It got me thinking about my favorite birthday as a kid. On my eighth birthday, my best friend, Cynthia, gave me a runt piglet. He required bottle-feeding much to my delight. Whenever I got the chance, I snuck him into bed and cuddled him all night. The only photo I have of him is from the back, so here’s a work in progress of Porky and me.
I know I’m a few days early, but Happy Birthday, Cynthia…I’ll never forget the precious gift you gave me all those years ago. Happily remembering pet bliss.
I couldn’t help it. Porky was so little, he really needed a nighttime snuggle.
